MTN Ghana has officially launched the 15th anniversary of its Mobile Money (MoMo) service, celebrating a decade and a half of contributions to financial and digital inclusion in the country. The anniversary, themed “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial and Digital Inclusion,” marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey.
Speaking at the launch in Takoradi, Mr Solomon Hayford, Head of Business Intelligence and Decision Support at Mobile Money Limited, delivered a message on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer. He highlighted the origins of MoMo, noting that it was conceived with the vision of expanding access to financial services across Ghana. “Fifteen years ago, the financial landscape in Ghana was vastly different. Many Ghanaians, particularly those in rural and underserved areas, struggled to access basic banking services, which hindered economic growth and personal empowerment,” Mr Hayford remarked.
He continued, “Recognizing this gap, we embarked on a mission to drive change by bringing financial services directly to the fingertips of every Ghanaian through mobile technology.”
Mr Hayford emphasized the transformative impact MoMo has had on Ghana’s economy, noting that the platform has empowered individuals, transformed businesses, and strengthened communities. However, he acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in the form of MoMo fraud, which continues to be a significant obstacle in promoting digital and financial inclusion.
“MoMo fraud is a serious concern for us at Mobile Money Limited. We are committed to working with all stakeholders to combat this issue through ongoing sensitization and awareness campaigns, as well as investing in robust security measures to protect our valued customers,” he stated. He also urged customers to remain vigilant against fraud by safeguarding their PINs, avoiding unsolicited links, and ignoring fraudulent SMS messages or calls.
Mr Hayford expressed gratitude to the company’s partners, including regulatory bodies, financial institutions, technology partners, agents, and merchants, for their essential roles in creating a supportive environment that has allowed MoMo to thrive.
To commemorate the 15th anniversary, MTN Ghana has planned a series of activities, including market launches, floats in major cities across the country, a MoMo fraud awareness campaign, and skills training for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The celebration will also feature an awards night to recognize outstanding contributions from various stakeholders, the launch of new services, and customer promotions.
