Copyright Office warns TV stations against pirating content; says offenders could face jail time

Ghana’s Copyright Office has issued a strong warning to Television stations nationwide not to air copyrighted material without the required authorization.

The Copyright Office emphasized that offenders face harsh legal repercussions, such as heavy fines and incarceration.

In a statement released on June 11, the Office’s National Anti-Piracy Committee said that it had uncovered numerous TV stations illegally downloading and airing movies, TV shows, sports broadcasts, and other creative works from streaming platforms without securing the required licenses.

“This practice constitutes copyright infringement and is a criminal offence under the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), as amended,” the statement said.

The committee observed that these infractions violate both national and international copyright laws, undermine Ghana’s creative sector, and deny content producers and rights holders their just compensation. As part of the immediate measures to curb the menace, all broadcasters have been instructed to immediately stop showing any unauthorized content, secure the necessary licenses from authorized agencies or rights holders, and maintain accurate records of all content acquisition agreements for verification reasons.

In an effort to combat piracy, the Copyright Office has said that it will step up enforcement and surveillance activities in coordination with law enforcement.

“We urge all broadcasters to respect intellectual property rights and contribute to the growth of Ghana’s creative economy by complying with the law,” the statement concluded.

This recent development comes following concerns raised by various stakeholders in the entertainment sector over the various copyright violations by TV stations across the country.
