A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration between 2017 and 2024 has publicly declared its full support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, June 23, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the group, calling itself the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, announced its “strong, unshaken endorsement” of the former Vice President. The endorsement comes ahead of the NPP’s internal flagbearer elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The forum emphasized that their backing is not just a public gesture but a commitment involving real political effort, time, and resources to secure Dr. Bawumia’s nomination and eventual election.
According to the group, its decision followed broad consultations with aspirants and a thorough evaluation of their capabilities and vision. They concluded that Dr. Bawumia stood out as the most capable leader to lead both the party and the nation.
“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. With 95% of us having previously served as Constituency and Regional Executives—some for over 16 years—we possess an intimate understanding of the NPP’s structures, dynamics, and electoral needs. We will deploy this experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana,” they said.
The former MMDCEs highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in driving Ghana’s digital transformation, citing achievements such as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless ports system. They argued these initiatives have improved efficiency and helped formalise important sectors of the economy.
They also commended his inclusive leadership approach, describing Dr. Bawumia as “accessible, humble, and a unifier” who maintains strong relationships across various factions of the party. His popularity with grassroots supporters, young people, and undecided voters, they said, gives the NPP a strategic edge heading into the 2028 elections.
The group believes that Dr. Bawumia’s national appeal, built up over years and solidified during the 2024 campaign, positions him as the NPP’s strongest candidate for the presidency.
They argued that electoral trends favour a familiar face, noting that beginning the campaign with a well-known figure like Dr. Bawumia gives the party a clear advantage over introducing a new candidate without a solid base.
The former executives see Dr. Bawumia as a leader who can combine continuity with fresh thinking, someone capable of protecting Ghana’s recent progress while introducing new ideas to drive development.
They pledged to leverage their political networks across all 16 regions to support his campaign rollout.
“We, the former MMDCEs, are not just endorsing, we are activating our networks. We will: Mobilise at the grassroots in all 16 regions, leveraging our deep-rooted connections. Engage in door-to-door campaigns, articulating Dr. Bawumia’s vision. Counter misinformation with facts about his achievements and potential. Resource the campaign through fundraising and logistical support.”
