Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo made history at the 2024 Summer Olympics, winning the men’s 200 meters, whic marks Africa’s first-ever gold medal in this event. In an unexpected outcome, Tebogo outpaced American sprinter Noah Lyles, who had been heavily favored to win after claiming gold in the 100 meters. Lyles ultimately took bronze, while his fellow American, Kenny Bednarek, secured the silver.
Tebogo garnered attention during the post-race press conference for his comments about Lyles. When asked if he envisioned himself as the new face of athletics, the 21-year-old replied, “I think, for me, I can’t be the face of athletics because I’m not an arrogant or a loud person like Noah. So, I believe Noah is the face of athletics.”Tebogo’s remarks have fueled speculation about whether he was subtly critiquing Lyles or merely recognizing the American’s prominent status in the sport. However, Lyles graciously congratulated Tebogo after the race and was taken out of the stadium in a wheelchair after it was disclosed that he had Covid.
