Michael Essien didn’t get the recognition he deserved – Mikel Obi

Former Nigeria captain Mikel Obi believes Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien was “underrated” during his time in the Premier League.

Essien joined Chelsea in 2005, signing for a then-club record fee of £24.4m from Lyon.

Despite scoring crucial goals for the Blues, including a notable strike against Barcelona in the 2009 Champions League semi-finals, Essien’s career at Chelsea was marked by injuries that limited his playing time.

Mikel Obi, who played alongside Essien at Chelsea, praised his former teammate’s abilities while talking to TNT sports.

“Michael Essien didn’t get the recognition he deserved… We called him the train. When he goes, it is difficult to stop; power, speed, technique. Everything he had.”Essien and Mikel played 125 matches together for Chelsea, winning 82, drawing 23, and losing 20.

During his eight-and-a-half-year stay at Chelsea, Essien won eight trophies, including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, one Champions League, and one League Cup.

After a loan spell at Real Madrid in the 2012/2013 season, Essien left Chelsea to join AC Milan.
