The Minority in Parliament has called on President Akufo-Addo to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of the directors of Lamens Investments Africa, the company accused of repackaging and distributing expired rice to some Senior High Schools earlier this year.
North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, revealed that 22,000 kilograms of expired rice were repackaged and distributed to SHS students under the government’s school feeding programme.
Speaking to the press on Monday, November 18, Mr. Ablakwa expressed concern over the President’s silence on the matter, which has drawn significant public outrage.
“The NDC Caucus demands the immediate arrest and prosecution of the directors of Lamens Investments Africa Limited, Mr. Agyefi Mensah and Simon Agyei – those two directors. Simon Agyei at the time of the arrest was there supervising the illegal operations at the Buffer Stock company in Kumasi before the order came from above that he should be released. We demand their re-arrest and prosecution,” he stated.
The Minority also called for a thorough investigation into the National Food Buffer Stock Company, alleging that its facilities were used to store the expired rice.
They criticised the company for operating unregistered storage sites and demanded sanctions against its Board and Management.
“Such recklessness which sacrifices the health of our students for corrupt transactions must not go unpunished,” Mr. Ablakwa added.
Additionally, the Caucus urged an inquiry into the Ministry of Education, accusing it of pressuring the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to overlook regulatory violations in the case.
