The National Peace Council (NPC) and the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) have strongly condemned the recent vandalism at the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo, located in the Savannah Region.

Angry youth reportedly set the EC office ablaze following delays in the declaration of election results, causing extensive damage to the building and its contents. Eyewitnesses described the frustration of the youth, who stormed the premises and carried out the arson. Authorities have since arrested the suspects.

In a statement, the NPC and WANEP expressed their concerns, saying, “The National Peace Council (NPC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and other partners in the Election Situation Room are aware of reports that the Electoral Commission (EC) office and collation centre in Damango, Savannah Region, has been vandalised and set ablaze.”

The statement urged political supporters to avoid gathering at collation centres, emphasizing the importance of respecting the official process. “It is essential that political supporters withdraw from the collation centres and allow their accredited agents to observe the collation process. The NPC calls on party leaders to make a public call on their supporters to withdraw from collation centres.”

Additionally, the NPC appealed to all parties to allow EC personnel to execute their duties without interference. “The NPC calls on all sides to allow Electoral Commission personnel to carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity in order to deliver a free, fair and transparent election.”
