Renowned Ghanaian musician and producer, Raphael Camidoh, has reiterated the importance of significant investment in high-quality music production, particularly in the area of music videos, by stakeholders in the Ghanaian music industry. His remarks came in response to discussions comparing the success of Nigeria’s music industry to that of Ghana.
In an interview with Melvin Da Enigma on Luv FM, Camidoh highlighted that local industry players tend to invest less in their craft compared to their Nigerian counterparts.
He pointed out that Ghanaian music investors are often hesitant to fully support artists, especially when it comes to producing music videos and marketing. “But in Nigeria, their budget for shooting a music video is massive, if one takes a look at their budget, it can be able to shoot a Ghanaian film,” he said.
Camidoh believes that Nigerian investors understand the potential and returns from the music industry, a vision that is lacking in Ghana’s music space.
While acknowledging some growth in the local industry, he suggested that more could be achieved by adopting the strategies seen in Nigeria. His hit single, “Sugarcane Remix,” recently garnered over 100 million views on YouTube—the highest for any Ghanaian artist—further emphasizing the value of increased investment in one’s craft.
Camidoh also shared the inspiration behind his musical journey, citing Akon as a major influence. He recounted his humble beginnings selling Sobolo, Pure Water, and Asanaa at Ola Girls SHS in the Volta Region, where he would sit and write his raps.
Grateful for the support from his fanbase and Ghanaians, Camidoh encouraged emerging artists to find their unique path in order to remain relevant. “To find a spot, you need to find that unique thing that nobody else can do,” he advised.
