The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with a series of high-profile defeats in the 2024 parliamentary elections, as several prominent Members of Parliament lose their seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The results point to a shifting political tide, with only a few NPP MPs managing to hold onto their positions.

Major Defeats for the NPP

Among the most notable losses is KT Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi Asokwa. Hammond secured 13,275 votes but was unseated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani, who garnered 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) trailed far behind with 346 votes.

Dakoa Newman, MP for Okaikwei South, also joined the list of NPP casualties, alongside Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West. Owusu-Ekuful delivered a lackluster performance, polling 26,575 votes. Her NDC challenger, Rev. Kweku Addo, emerged victorious with 31,866 votes.

In Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey lost his seat to the NDC’s Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu. Quartey received 23,345 votes, while Tubazu claimed the seat with 29,755 votes. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) managed just 163 votes. The total votes cast in the constituency stood at 53,550, with 287 ballots declared invalid.

Similarly, Sylvester Tetteh, MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, was defeated after polling 27,888 votes. His NDC opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey, won decisively with 37,473 votes.

The trend continued in Dormaa East, where the incumbent MP, Twum Barima, narrowly lost after securing 12,050 votes. Rachel Owusuaa of the NDC clinched victory with 12,310 votes.

NDC’s Momentum Highlights Political Shift

These victories underline the NDC’s growing momentum, particularly in key constituencies, and signal mounting challenges for the NPP as it contends with the implications of these defeats.

The results reflect a need for the NPP to reevaluate its strategies and address emerging dynamics in Ghana’s evolving political landscape.
