University of Ghana Suspends Senior Lecturer for Sexual Harassment

The University of Ghana has imposed a two-semester suspension on Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, following allegations of sexual harassment.

A notice issued on March 12, 2025, and signed by Registrar Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, confirmed that Dr. Appiah was found guilty of misconduct. He violated Section 1.1(A) of the Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy as well as Section 10.0 of the Academic Staff Code of Conduct.

As part of the disciplinary measures, Dr. Appiah is required to submit a formal written apology to the complainant. Furthermore, he will not be eligible to apply for promotion for one year after completing his suspension. He is also mandated to participate in a training program on sexual harassment and misconduct, which will be organized by the university’s Anti-Sexual Harassment Committee.

In addition to Dr. Appiah’s suspension, sanctions were also imposed on 16 students for various forms of misconduct. The university has called on all community members to familiarize themselves with institutional policies and to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects these standards.
